Popular since the 1800s in the Western world, Swedish massage uses a combination of different strokes applied to skin with the aid of a lubricant (lotion or oil). The goal is to promote muscle relaxation, improve circulation and reduce stress.
Clients privately undress, but may wear their underwear. You then lie comfortably on a massage table covered with sheets and/or blankets to keep you warm and safe.
Starting with gentle, gliding strokes (effleurage), I will incorporate kneading and squeezing motions (petrissage) on stiff muscle groups to stretch and break down small adhesions in the tissues. I may add friction strokes around your joints if desired. This is followed by percussion (tapping) movements to either stimulate or sedate the nerves, based on your needs. I may apply gentle rocking and pressure using my forearm and hand (vibration) over the body for a smoothing effect. The pace is slow with relaxation as the main goal.
A full-body Swedish massage is a perfect introductory session, a nice reward for yourself, or a great gift for someone you care about. Often my clients want Swedish massage combined with one or more other therapies.
